Somara basked in the warm sun of the beach. She was on her yearly vacation, and this year they had gone to an island. She never remembered the name. It must be the heat. she thought to herself. Somara got up and told her parents that she was going for a swim. They were in the spa, and told her that when they were leaving they would get her. So, with that taken care of, Somara leapt off the ledge and into the chilly, clear blue water. The moment her face touched the water, all of her senses were awakened. Chills were sent up her spine, but she thought of them as mere chills from the cold. She came up for a breath before diving down to explore.
The ocean was filled with many different creatures! So many nooks and crannies to explore! At one point, she thought she might drown because of the lack of oxygen. The beauty had taken her breath away. She quickly surfaced and this time swam straight down. The feeling of being watched made the hairs on the back fo her neck stand up. She glanced around. No one was near her. But then, what was making her so afraid?
Something caught the corner of her eye. It was a cavern, right underneath where she had been standing just moments before. A light was escaping from it, and it drew her closer. That tingly feeling she had felt so many times before shot through her entire body. Ever so cautiously, she made her way to the front of the cave. When she stepped inside, she could breathe! It was an air bubble underneath the ledge! However, that was impossible, for the whole outside of the cavern was surrounded by water. Magic she thought to herself. It must be magic. A noise quickly changed the moment from peaceful to dreadful.
"He-Hello? Is anyone there?" her voice sounded an echo throughout the cavern. When no one answered back, she walked back to the front of the cavern. When she tried to step out through the wall of water, she twisted her knee. She kept slamming the wall, yelling cries of help, but no one would answer. As she turned around, dropping to the floor in utter despair, she saw that light again. It was shining at the back of the cave. This time, it almost sounded like it was calling her name...but was it?
She decided to follow it, because that could've been the way out. The light led her past dozens of doors and hallways. She finally reached the end of a hallway. There stood a lone door, with the words Welcome, Somara written on it. How had it known her name? She quietly pushed open the door. The room was bare, except for a statue of mermaids and dragons at the far end of the hall. In the middle of the statue was a throne. It had dust and spiderwebs covering it, but the threshold looked very good. The velvet was still soft, and even the statue itself had no cracks in it. She slowly made her way to the end of the room, where a light was eluminating from the chair. The stitching had her name written in it's patterns, so she assumed that the chair was for her. A loud click could be heard throughout the room, and she quickly stood up, alarmed. Good thing too, because the throne was being pulled back into the wall. It slid to the right an disappeared into the wall. A black curtain hung behind it.
She stepped through the curtain, momentarily blinded by a magnificent light flowing from a chest. Wow, this is it. I must be a guardian. she thought to herself. She carefully inched toward the chest, praying that it wouldn't blow up in her face. As she kneeled down at the chest, words were written on it, under layers of dust that had accumulated over the years. She took her hand over the letters, wincing at the pain of splinters. The chest read:
My Child, within this chest lies the future of our world. It is in your hands now. Use this honor well, Somara. Takameme Facetiohous.
Ever so gently, she opened the box. Inside was a beautiful locket. She tenderly placed it around her neck.
"Locket of the guardians, please take me to the Water guardians!" she chanted. The statue closed behind her, but she no longer cared. The world was spinning, and she found herself melting away.
When she opened her eyes again, the spinning had stopped, she was in the ocean, but surrounded by water. In front of her, an egg was wobbling. She touched it, making sure that it was real and the water wasn't playing tricks on her. As soon as she fingered it, she had to pull her hand away. It had cracked, and soon the whole thing was cracking. Finally, it burst open. A tiny, almost clear dragon sat in front of her.
"Hello there." It said. "Who are you?"
Somara lifted her hand and pointed to her mouth then shook her head, signalling that she couldn't talk.
"Yes you can. You are the water guardian. You can breath underwater now."
As she cautiously took a breath, she felt a sharp pain right behind her ears. She softly stroked the area, only to find tiny slits. She had grown gills!
"Where did they come from!!!" she exclaimed.
"Never mind that, we'll explore your powers later. But for now, we must move along with this as quickly as possible. Now, what are you going to name me?"
"Well I'm thinking about calling you snot-booger for that sassy attitude of yours, but then i would get ridiculed..." she snuck a peek at It. It wasn't buying that act.
"Just name me! We are one of the last guardians to be awakened! We must hurry!"
"I guess I'll name you Takameme Facetiohous because you need peace."
"Good name!" Takameme Facetiohous replied.
"Okay, Taka, you are a girl right?"
"Yes, yes yes!!! Of course!" She answered.
"Whew! Good thing too!"
"Now, we must be off. I may be newly born, but I know some other guardians have been awakened. I believe they are the Air, the middle, Fire, the oldest, and Light, the newest, other than us.There may be more, but I know not of which guardians they are."
"Um, do you know where we are to go?"
"I believe the Air Nation. I cannot fly yet, until you learn of your powers. So, that's next on our agenda."
"I have more than one?"
"Of course, but we have to be on land for the other ones. So, let's go."
"One question...where are we? We have to know where we are in order to get back."
"No, just use the locket."
"This thing can teleport me?"
"Only if you teleport into water."
"Oh...okay then. Locket of the Water Guardian, take us to the cavern."
"Now picture it in your mind, otherwise we could be transported to somewhere in Dark nation!"
Somara did what she was told. Soon, they were back on their feet at the front of the cavern, where what felt like hours earlier she had been pounding on the wall of water. Now, she merely stepped through. Nothing was holding her back. As she surfaced, she saw burning embers.
"Mom! Dad!" she cried. Their tent was glowing a reddish-orange color. It must've been enveloped by flames first. She put her hands to her face and wished all of the flames away. A piece of wood almost came down on top of her. She outstreched her hands and a burst of water spat out. The wood was burnt, but not burning anymore.
With her new-found power, she began hosing down the whole fiery pit. The first thing she did was the tent. She couldn't get a closer look, but she didn't see her parents' bodies.
"That's a good thing." Somara had almost forgotten Taka was there.
"Maybe..." she said.
Just as she was turning around to put out the fire in the hotel, she tripped. Sand stung her eyes, but the tears hadn't come from that. They had come from who she had tripped over. It was a burnt man, with the face of an angel. It was her dad.
"No!!!!" She cried. Taka rushed to her side, and tried to pull her away. She fought back and layed on top of her dad, crying over him.
"We have to go! The pyro's who started this mess are coming back! We can't do anything!"
Somara looked back. Taka had grown to almost a full dragon now.
"You learned of your powers, and I, mine. I can not only shoot fire, but also water. However, I cannot revive. I'm sorry." Suddenly, she was writhing in pain. Taka's right wing had been bent back by a tree, and now it was almost broken.
"We have to go, NOW!" Taka yelled. "Climb on my back, I think I can fly. Just hold on!!!"
Somara refused to, so Taka picked her up and placed her on her back. Before she could resist, she was floatint, flying toward the moon, where it was rising. They were headed east, toward the Air Nation. Taka kept jerking because she couldn't fly well enough yet, but she eventually did fall asleep. That was her only escape from the terrible yet wonderful events of the bitter-sweet afternoon.
